Historical Archive: Reliquary of St. Oswald

Saint Oswald, King of Northumbria, died 642
gold, silver, niello, enamel, and gems on wood core
height 47.5 cm, diameter base 27 cm (18.7 x 10.6 inches)
octagon c.1170-1190 (1185-89?), patron Mathilda of Saxony (m. Duke Henry the Lion 1168)
head c.1200-1250, patron possibly Otto IV or Henry IV
crown panels c.1150-1200 (bracelet or cuff), assembled c.1200, and 15th century
some inscriptions 14th c.; in Hildesheim by 1409; all partly restored 1779
from the cathedral of St. Mary; part of the Guelph treasure
